When many people say that they want to lose weight it is not so much the weight itself they are interested in, though they will worry about their weight, what they tend to mean is they want to lose fat. Fat from around their stomach, their rear, their legs, their chins or anything else they are worried about.

And with good reason. Not only have we become very superficial as a society but we have also created the idea of the slim ‘waif’ as something of an ideal. But whilst that may be the ideal that is less than healthy the wish to lose fat is certainly a healthy one – increased fat weight can lead to heart disease, diabetes and much more.

But whilst dieting can help us lose the fat we need it also brings its own dangers and problems. Far more effective at stripping fat from our bodies but leaving us healthy is use of exercise. The question then becomes – which exercises are best for burning the fat? No one wants to waste time and energy they could be using elsewhere so how should they go about burning fat?

Fat burning is not the same as getting physically fit for sports, so be careful when you are researching ways to get fit. The target here is to slim your body down by trimming away fat, not to increase your speed over certain distances.

The best way to do that is to do a lot of low intensity cardio work that works a number of muscles. This is because high intensity builds muscle, which whilst burning fat will also be increasing size rather than trimming fat.

So what are the best fat burning exercises?

Weight lifting is a surprising entry but a lot of low weight, high repetition weight lifts can burn a lot of fat, especially as it is so easy to focus on a number of different areas with different exercises. Almost as importantly weight lifting provides a big boost to the bodies metabolism, meaning that you can still be losing weight for hours after exercising.

The cross trainer and step machines in the gym should also get your special attention. Both of these machines will work your arms and legs, and increase the range of movement in the leg – meaning more muscles used to a greater extent – hence more fat burned.

Traditional exercises such as jogging and cycling can be very useful but these 4 exercises are very powerful when you are trying to burn calories and lose weight simply because of how many muscles they use. Not only that they will strengthen and tone your body without making you too muscle bound. Make sure you look at how best to include these into your fat burning efforts.

I don’t know the answer to that! My trainer insists that I go no higher than 80% of my maximum and what I do is adjust the settings until my heart is right there. I don’t push beyond that.

I’ve always been a little heavy, but last February I was an all-time high of 115kg so I started my fitness kick. Since last Feb I’ve been walking ~5 times per week, usually for about 45mins. I also fence one night a week. I’m feeling fitter, but I’ve also put on some of the fat I had lost last year as well as some muscle, and my main problem is that on a day-to-day basis, I have trouble staying motivated. I’m good with exercise, but bad with food.

I’ve tried:
- Sticking “suggested eating” lists on the cupboard, for when I get peckish
- Putting posters up with pictures of my rewards once I reach my goals
- Asking my sports coach to be my weight loss coach, he said yes
- Asking friends to exercise with me

I walk with a friend once or twice a week, but none of my other friends are interested. I live alone, so I have to moderate my own food. I have a low-lactose, gluten free diet, so no Jenny Craig meals.

So, other people who had to go it alone, how did you do it?
I’m a 21yo girl, height 6’1 (~184cm), current weight 110kg (~240 pounds).

Someone asked what I wanted from this: my goal is kind of vague, but I want to be healthier and fitter. I don’t really care what people see when they look at me, its more about what I see in the mirror and how I feel as I go about my day – I don’t like feeling big, slow and wobbly!

Through consultation with dieticians and doctors, my goal weight is 86kg. This is the top of the normal weight range for my height, so once I get near there we can reassess what my weight should be, taking into account my muscle and fat weights and build. I’m not terribly fussed about my weight once it is below 90kg (~200 pounds), because with the increased fitness and hopefully healthier eating, the weight should take care of itself.

You are not eating enough to be healthy, never mind weight loss. for goodness sake talk to somebody you trust and gop see your doctor, talk truthfully to him/her.

According to their site the pills you took contain green tea (which has caffeine) and more caffeine – 80mgs plus, among other things, elutheria (Siberian ginseng) which can accentuate the action of other drugs and can also raise blood pressure.

Lipozene appears to contain Glucomannan which is dietary fibre. There doesn’t seem to be any medical evidence to support their claims re the claims they make.
